End SARS Protest
A nationwide protest began on October 8, 2020 calling on the government to disband the abusive Police unit called SARS.
The ENDSARS protest is a social movement in Nigeria that started on the 8th of October via Twitter calling for banning of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a unit of the Nigerian Police Force, known for oppression and brutality. The protests started as a social media campaign using the hashtag #ENDSARS to demand for the Nigerian Government to disband the notorious SARS unit. The real energy came when Rinu Oduala, a PR strategist lead a group of protesters to spend the night outside the Lagos state government house, Alausa on October 8, 2020 and since then the protesters have camped at the spot while the protest spread worldwide.
On Tuesday 13 October 2020, the Nigerian Police Force PRO announced the dissolution of SARS and formation of SWAT to fill the gaps arising from the dissolution of SARS but the protesters are not backing down claiming this is just a ploy to get them to stop the protest and also that the SARS operatives involved will just move to the new outfit and continue their brutality against the citizen. The government has continued to violently repress protests despite the announcement.
